In 1962 this building was built using translucent curtain wall panels around the entire perimeter. The 5 ft x 10 ft panels weigh approximately 2 pounds per square foot and were made by Cemcel Inc. of Richmond, California. Natural light passes through the panels to illuminate the interior spaces with warm, pleasing and inexpensive light. This is the oldest use of FRP for exterior curtain walls we are aware of in the U.S. This building is now occupied by the Stanford University Procurement Department but is slated for demolition to make way for a new roadway. Although some of the panels facing the most severe weather could use a new clear coat, the panels are structurally sound and could easily serve many more years with little if any maintenance.
