K&A Scope of Work: Design, and fabrication of terra cotta cornice and pilaster replicas from GFRC and FRP.

Project Description: This building was done in two phases.

Phase I: When the entrance to 345 California Street was remodeled, it exposed this previously hidden wall on the side of the Robert Dollar Building. To dress it up a bit, the cornice and molding on the California Street side were brought around the corner. This was executed using GFRC.

Phase II: Three years later, the building owners decided to bring the storefront on the California Street side around the corner as well. This meant extending the cornice another 50 feet and creating replicas of the California Street pilasters and capitals. This time we made the pieces in fiberglass and polymer concrete. These FRP replicas of the original terra cotta were preassembled onto an intermediate steel frame to expedite installation. Prefinished with varying colors to more closely mimic terra cotta’s inconsistency, the pilasters are also engineered to serve as window mullion supports.
