| What do Darth Vader,
Michael Tilson Thomas, Howard the Duck, Lucciano Pavoratti,
Steven Spielberg and the 1996 Summer Olympics have in common?
They all rely to some degree or another on K&A composite products
to perform their art. And the list doesn't stop there. In fact,
we've had encounters with Pavoratti on three separate occasions:
at the San Francisco Opera where we built sets for Aida, in
Davies Hall with the San Francisco Symphony's new acoustic walls,
and near Chicago where the great tenor performed at the grand
opening of the renovated Ravinia Festival pavilion featuring an
all-composites acoustic band shell. Composite materials have long been used to create illusions on both stage and screen. John Wayne's cabin in one of his movies is wedged beneath a huge boulder still in place over the 35-year-old set in Monument Valley, Arizona. Intended to last just a few weeks, the 1/16" thick FRP rock is doing at least as well as the sandstone it mimics. Today, composite materials are being used for more sophisticated and demanding applications as the theater and movie industries continue to push into unexplored territory. And when composite materials are needed, K&A is a frequent choice. From design to engineering to fabrication and delivery, K&A's unique and creative skills are a good match for the creative demands of this industry.
