K&A Scope of Work: Scanning, enlargement, and foam machining

Project Description: Sculptor Robert Graham asked us to scan and enlarge his bas-relief sculpture of FDR in his first inaugural motorcade.  The sculpture is taken from old movie footage.  Graham's original was done in three one-foot square clay tiles.  K&A scanned each one and enlarged them to 3 ft by 3 ft in machinable foam on the large three axis milling machine.  The foam "patterns" were sent to Artworks Foundry in Berkeley, CA, where molds were taken for casting in bronze.

The relief is positioned at the entrance of the new FDR memorial on the mall in Washington, D.C. just beneath the President's famous saying, carved into the granite wall,  "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself".  The memorial is divided into chambers representing the three terms of the President.  Robert Graham was selected to provide the sculpture for this entrance piece, as well as for the first chamber which features several other works by Graham.
