Project Description: Dixie, the 80 ft long apatosaurus, made the 60-mile journey from the K&A shop in Petaluma to her home along Interstate 80 in Dixon, California, suspended from the belly of a helicopter. Digitally enlarged from a 12" scale model, Dixie is an example of K&A’s state-of-the-art sculpture enlarging technology, utilizing computer imaging and computer controlled milling. Wooden slices were cut using the scanned and enlarged computer image, then diagonal laths were laid to give shape and support for the fiberglass layer. Since the surface was to be very highly textured, the initial fiberglass required no fairing or smoothing. A filled resin "skin texture" coating was applied over the rough fiberglass and painted. Dixie was later moved to her current home at The Customer Company's headquarters in Benicia, CA.
