K & A   Prana Translucent Bronze Panels

Location: Desert Passage at The Aladdin, Las Vegas

K&A Scope of Work:    Design, engineer, and fabricate translucent bronze 3-D relief panels based on architects 2-D artwork.

Project Description: K&A worked with Holt Hinshaw architects to create this distinctive exterior facade.  The surface relief started as 2-D line art manipulated and mirrored in Photoshop.  K&A then used Rhino 3-D CAD program to raise the lines from the background surface creating a 3-D relief.  MasterCam created CNC toolpath over the 3-D relief data which in turn was used to mill urethane foam molds on K&A's large scale CAD/CAM gantry mill.  Finite element analysis was used to develop a translucent structural laminate capable of withstanding wind and seismic forces.  The "bronze" finish was achieved by applying varying thicknesses of bronze powder-filled gelcoat.  Panels were approximately 4' x 8' each and were delivered to the site ready to install.  Installation was quick and straightforward.  Back lighting turns these apparently solid bronze panels into ethereal translucent sculpture at night.
