K & A    Floating Dock

 Client: Monterey Bay Aquarium
 Engineer: Juri Komendant
 Location: Monterey, CA

K&A Scope of Work:   MBA, a long-time client of K&A, commissioned K&A to design, engineer, and fabricate this gangplank and platform.  Design criterion required an all-composite structure.  Even the hinges are composite pultruded rods in Teflon bushings.  The platform is raised and lowered by an overhead hoist so total weight of the assembled platform needed to be ≤ 3000 lbs.  Engineering criterion required the system withstand side impact from 3-foot seas with allowable deflections.  Additional requirements included safety, durability, serviceability, and maintenance issues.

K&A met all the design criterion within a tight budget and delivered this prefabricated system, which was installed in one day's work at the jobsite, replacing a 15 year old composite dock more than double the weight and less able to withstand side loads.

Project Description:   All composite gangplank and suspended platform at Monterey Bay Aquarium serves as a retractable launching platform for small research vessels.
