Digital Image Reference:

Overview#2:  This image shows all the components of the installation.  The bust by Hiram Powers (right) was executed in 1849.  Collins scanned the original marble sculpture by Powers using 3D laser scanning equipment.  The dataset was subsequently distorted using 3D Studio Max, a computer modeling application.  The image of George Washington's head was extruded along a single axis to create in effect a 3D anamorphic rendering of a portion of the Powers sculpture.  This information was used to mill an 8 foot long sculpture from 4 lb. urethane foam.  This Sculpture form was subsequently surfaced in resin and auto-body primer.  In the installation, the sculpture is suspended with monofilament line.  A closed circuit video camera is positioned to "recapture" the corrected image, which is displayed on a monitor beneath the sculpture.  Hiram Powers' sculpture of George Washington is situated such that the image of Washington appears to be gazing at his virtual image on the video monitor.
