| K&A Scope of Work: | K&A fabricated this translucent FRP and steel "Tornado" chandelier, which serves as the centerpiece at the celebrated PRANA nightclub and restaurant. PRANA won Esquire Magazine's annual Best Restaurant Design Award in 2003. |
| Project Description: | Working from 3-D CAD data developed by the architect, using Rhino software, K&A produced 12 compound curved 8' x 3' translucent FRP "lenses" along with the supporting steel frame. These lenses were fabricated on urethane foam molds milled on K&A's CNC machines, directly from the architect's CAD data. Other than a typical connection detail, no "shop drawings" were required. Fabrication proceeded directly from the architect thanks to a close collaboration between designer and fabricator. Holt Hinshaw Architects are aggressively pioneering the use of composite materials in architecture and have executed several unique projects in close collaboration the K&A staff. |
